| Bahrain Steel is committed to provide high quality iron oxide pellets on time to its customers. The plant imports iron ores, the primary raw material, mainly from Brazil. The Grate-Kiln technology is used for pelletizing the iron ores. As part of pelletizing process, the ores undergo drying, grinding, balling and indurating process stages. Natural gas is used as fuel. Quality of pellets produced is checked at every process stage, to detect abnormalities in time.
Bahrain Steel takes utmost care to protect the environment. The company spent about USD20 million within the last 3 years to enhance environment protection. Some of the environment projects are listed below:
- WindBarrier is a 20 m high and 2.5 km long wall surrounding the ore and pellet stockyards to minimize airborne dust during handling
- Dust Suppression System is a water mist spray system to abate dust at conveyor transfer points
- Online Monitoring System is to continuously monitor and record stack emissions of particulate matter, SOx, NOx, CO2 etc.
Bahrain Steel produces its own power and water for Pellet Plant No.1 by means of gas turbine generator units and a desalination unit, employing the total energy concept to achieve high thermal efficiency. Bahrain Steel also has its own jetty, equipped with ship-loading and unloading facilities. However, for Pellet Plant No.2, power and water are supplied from the public network.
The plant is suitably located in close proximity to the pellet markets in the Gulf, India and South East Asia.
